Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how HanziLevel ("the App", "we", "us") collects, uses, and protects information when you use our Android application and the companion website at hanzilevel.com.

1. Information We Collect

Account information. When you create an account, we collect your email address, a password (stored in hashed/encrypted form — we never see or store it in plain text), and a display name you choose. You may optionally select an avatar image from a built-in set of presets; we do not access your camera, photo gallery, or device storage to do this.

Study and progress data. As you use the App, we store data needed to power your learning experience, including: which HSK words you have studied, your mastery scores and review schedule (spaced-repetition data), quiz results, daily XP earned, and your study streak.

Leaderboard data. If you participate in the leaderboard, your display name, avatar, total/weekly XP, streak, and number of mastered characters are visible to other users of the App.

Information we do NOT collect. We do not collect your precise location, contacts, photos, microphone or camera data, browsing history outside the App, or any advertising identifiers. The App contains no advertising and no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information described above only to:

• Create and authenticate your account and keep you signed in
• Save and sync your study progress across devices (and with hanzilevel.com, which shares the same backend)
• Calculate and display XP, streaks, mastery levels, and leaderboard rankings
• Operate core app features such as spaced-repetition scheduling and quizzes
• Maintain, secure, and improve the App

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.

3. How Your Information Is Stored

Your account and study data are stored on secure cloud infrastructure provided by Supabase, our database and authentication provider, which also powers hanzilevel.com. Data in transit is encrypted (HTTPS/TLS). The App requires only the standard Android INTERNET permission to communicate with our servers — it requests no other device permissions.

4. Data Retention and Deletion

We retain your account and study data for as long as your account is active, so that your progress is preserved across sessions and devices. If you would like your account and associated data deleted, contact us at the email address below and we will process your request within a reasonable time.

5. Children's Privacy

HanziLevel is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can remove it.

6. Your Choices

You can update your display name and avatar at any time from your profile within the App. You may stop using the App at any time; to request deletion of your account and data, contact us using the details below.

7. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you within the App or on hanzilevel.com.
